Also known as Co-Occurring Disorders
When someone suffers from co-occurring addiction and mental health issues, treatment must address both concerns. Alcohol and/or other drug addiction and abuse can mask, mimic, worsen, and even prompt symptoms of many mental health issues including depression, anxiety, and psychotic disorders.
In these cases, addiction relapse can lead to a deterioration of mental health and vice versa, a worsening of a mental health issue can lead to addiction relapse. Thorough assessment paired with support and treatment is essential, and relapse prevention must be specifically designed for clients with dual disorders. Therapy is an important and effective part of assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
